Minis Tournament - 2011
Fun in the sun for 1500 young rugby players
More than 1,500 young rugby players, aged from six to eleven, took part in the 24th Windsor Rugby Club Mini Rugby Festival on Sunday (2 October). With around 2,000 supporters cheering on the youngsters, the Home Park has rarely been busier. The sun shone and ice cream sellers did great business as 12 teams from all over the South East competed in six different age groups for trophies and medals, but mainly for the sheer enjoyment of taking part. This year’s tournament, sponsored by international real estate adviser Savills, was the biggest for many years. Local clubs Windsor, Maidenhead, Bracknell and Redingensians were joined by well-known names from further afield, including Richmond, Saracens and Rosslyn Park.

Hosts Windsor performed well, winning the Under-8 A and B competitions and finishing as runners-up in the Under-9 A and Under-7 B groups. Another notable local success was Maidenhead, joint winners at Under-10A and winners of the Under-10B group. Mike Crawshaw, Youth Chairman of Windsor Rugby Club, paid tribute to the team of organisers, referees and support staff who enabled this vast event to run so smoothly: “We played some 250 matches in a five-hour period on 20 pitches and provided catering for hundreds of people. I cannot speak highly enough about the superb team we have here. In addition, our thanks go to our great sponsors, Savills, who not only help with our funding but also take part on the day with such enthusiasm.”

Windsor RFC Youth Section, one of the strongest in the county, welcomes all players from ages five to 17, regardless of ability. See Age Group website pages or Contacts on Home page for contact details.
